✨ Mae Kham Update

The Matriarch of the herd

Our beloved Mae Kham is getting older, but true to her strong character, she’s still going strong – especially when it comes to her appetite!

Though she’s not roaming as far as she once did, her night fence is now closer to her day area, ensuring she’s as comfortable as possible.

As she’s aging, Mae Kham has started losing her teeth, which has made it a bit trickier for her to eat. Now, she enjoys daily delivery meals, where we carefully chop and soften her food to make sure she continues to eat like the queen that she is.

At Mekong Elephant Park, we strive to minimize our interference, allowing our elephants to follow the natural yearly cycle of weight gain at the end of the rainy season and weight loss towards the end of the dry season. However, due to Mae Kham’s advanced age, she is receiving extra care and special attention to ensure her well-being.

👉 Did you know? Elephants go through six sets of teeth over their lifetime, and once their final set wears out, it becomes difficult for them to chew. This is why elder elephants like Mae Kham need additional support with their nutrition, especially at the end of the dry season when food is harder to find.

If you’d like to support Mae Kham’s meals and help us keep her strong and happy through this season, your donation would mean the world. 💚
