Our Night Fence: A Dream Realized

As we shared in late 2024, thanks to your generous donations, we were able to secure the necessary funds to build a dedicated night fence for our female elephants Mae Nin, Mae Nat et Mae Ping. After months of preparation, planning, and overcoming logistical challenges, we are thrilled to announce—it’s finally up!
Our Female Elephants Say THANK YOU!
This has been one of our most ambitious projects yet. Extending our concession, sourcing materials, organizing transport, and constructing the fence in a remote forest with no road access was no small feat. The dedicated Thai team in charge faced harsh conditions and moments of doubt, but their perseverance never wavered. After 15 days of intense work, with a team of 16 people, the fence is now complete!
The impact? Our female elephants (except for Mae Kham who, given her age, prefers her own privatized peaceful corner) can now not only sleep together in a secure and natural environment, but they can also walk, move, and eat all night long. The goal was always to build a large night enclosure that would allow them to remain active, as in the wild.
Did you know? Elephants only sleep about three hours per night—they spend the rest of their time eating and walking. Thanks to this new space, they can now follow their natural rhythms in complete safety.
And what do our night cameras reveal? We’ve been lucky to catch glimpses of our females a few times, and as expected—no matter what time it is, if you see one, you see the three of them! Always together, even during the night!
Next challenge? We’re still trying to capture all three of them sleeping at the same time on video. With 15 hectares to roam, they change sleeping spots every night, making it tricky to guess where they’ll settle. But we’re determined, and we’ll be sharing a video of our three girls sleeping together soon—we hope!
Why this matters so much: Socialization & Safety
Beyond social benefits, the night fence also enhances their safety and well-being. Even in sanctuaries, disturbances can affect their sleep and stress levels. A secure enclosure minimizes these risks, providing a peaceful space where they can rest undisturbed, ultimately supporting their health and happiness.

Dokeo’s New Life of Freedom
& What comes next
Dokeo is thriving in his new home at Mekong Elephant Park!
Each day, he embraces the joys of a true elephant’s life—wandering freely, foraging for fresh plants, rolling in dust baths, and cooling off with long, playful dips in the Mekong River.

And now, we’re working on the next steps! Now that the necessary funds have been collected, we are in the process of transferring the funds and meeting with his previous owners. At the same time, we are also working on obtaining his official papers—so that Dokeo can finally have his own family book and a microchip, just like a legally recognized elephant. This is an important step toward ensuring his long-term protection and a secure future.
This is just the beginning of his journey—stay tuned on social media for more updates on Dokeo and our growing herd!
