Dokeo’s Journey, Kham Khoun’s Friendship & the Power of Planting

🤝From Strangers to Companions:

Dokeo & Kham Khoun’s growing friendship

In the wild, adult male Asian elephants are much more solitary than females, forming only loose associations with others outside of mating or feeding periods. But at Mekong Elephant Park, we know that even bulls benefit from safe social interactions—especially those who are adjusting to a new environment.

Introducing two males is never taken lightly. Not all male elephants are compatible, and socialization must be carefully managed to ensure both individuals feel secure. It’s a slow, delicate process that can take weeks or even months.

That’s why the developing bond between Dokeo and Kham Khoun, our two resident males, is so remarkable. They regularly spend time together—sharing forest walks, quiet moments in the shade, and gentle interactions that reflect a growing sense of trust and companionship.

Slowly but surely, these two bulls are learning not just to coexist, but to connectFor Dokeo, who is still discovering what it means to live peacefully after years of hardship, these interactions are an important step in finding balance and trust. For Kham Khoun, already familiar with sanctuary life, Dokeo has become a new and calm companion.

From sharing food to resting side by side, each small gesture marks a big milestone. Their relationship is progressing slowly but surely, built on respect, patience, and natural curiosity.

Behind the Scenes: Dokeo’s Gentle Progress

While Dokeo is making emotional strides with Kham Khoun, he’s also slowly getting used to routine veterinary check-ups—an important step for any elephant in care.

With patience, positive reinforcement, and small rewards, we’re helping him become more comfortable being approached and handled. This means that, should he ever be injured, we’ll be able to examine and treat him safely and without stress.

🙏 It’s all part of building trust—and ensuring Dokeo’s long-term well-being.

🍌 Planting Hope:

1000 Banana Trees & A Corn Comeback!

Our elephants love bananas. A lot. And last year, we lost nearly 800 of their favourite treats when a powerful typhoon hit the Mekong region, flooding our land and devastating our plantation.

But if Mother Nature is wild, we’re just as resilient.

This month, we’re back at it—planting 1,000 new banana trees and bringing back our corn crops to ensure the herd has the nutrition they need for the year ahead. It’s muddy, it’s sweaty, and it’s hopeful work.

Because for us, replanting is more than recovery—it’s a sustainable promise.

A huge thank you to our dedicated team, passionate volunteers, and generous supporters who help keep our little jungle dream alive.

Wallpaper of the month

This month, we’ve dedicated our wallpaper to a scene that’s close to the hearts of both our team and our gentle giants: our female elephants bathing in the Mekong, joyfully welcoming the arrival of the monsoon season.

We hope this image brings a breath of fresh air to your screen—and a little piece of wild serenity to your day. May it also inspire you to come and experience this peaceful landscape in person.

We’d love to welcome you here at Mekong Elephant Park. 💚
