Celebrating the Birthdays of
Two Incredible Souls
This month, we’re thrilled to celebrate the birthdays of two remarkable members of our family at Mekong Elephant Park: Mae Nin and her mahout Chai. Since we don’t know our rescued elephants’ exact birthdates, we’ve chosen to honor Mae Nin with Chai’s birthday. This celebration is a tribute not only to our elephants but also to the dedication of those who care for them day in and day out.
Born in 1992, Mae Nin once spent her days working in the logging industry and away from her family. For the last year she has been given the opportunity to have a real elephant life, enjoying simple pleasures such as swimming, mudding, playing, grazing in the forest. Mae Nin loves spending time with the herd, especially with Mae Nat, her biological aunt. Mae Nin, Mae Ping, and Mae Nat, form a real clan and spend every moment together. From baths to forest walks, it’s all for one and one for all!
We couldn’t do this without the incredible support of our sponsors and donors. Your generosity ensures that we can continue to care for our elephants month after month. On this special day, we’re inviting you to sponsor Mae Nin and the herd, and support their life at our sanctuary.
Chai in the spotlight
This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Mister Chai, a dedicated mahout who has become an essential part of our team. Chai comes from the small Kamu village of Ban Houey Kha, a five-hour trek from Pakbeng.
After losing the elephant he once cared for, Chai stepped away from working with elephants for ten years.
But when Mae Nin arrived at the park, he felt a natural connection and agreed to become her mahout.
Chai is now responsible for vet checks and has been specially trained in elephant foot care by Wendy and Christopher. If you visit us, you might just catch a glimpse of Chai in action, tending to Mae Nin with the utmost care and compassion.
Remembering Boua’s Spirit
There isn’t a day that goes by without us thinking of Boua, our baby angel who left this world too soon. Boua would have turned two years old this month, and though her time with us was brief, she touched the hearts of everyone at Mekong Elephant Park with her playful spirit and gentle nature.
The park and the herd haven’t been the same without her, but we continue to honor her memory by making the park an even better habitat for our growing herd. Boua’s legacy inspires us every day to work towards a brighter future for all elephants.
World Elephant Day
August 12th marked a special occasion for all elephant lovers and our beloved elephants at Mekong Elephant Park.
World Elephant Day is dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants, and we celebrated by giving our elephants their favourite treats. We also took this opportunity to further our plans for spreading awareness about our conservation efforts.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to create a safe and loving environment for these majestic creatures.
Wallpaper of the month
In loving memories of Boua, we’ve decided to dedicate this month’s wallpaper to her. Boua had been and will always be our motivation to continue on this journey of giving rescued elephants the life they deserve. Whether it’s on your computer screen or your phone screen, we hope our little lotus flower Boua will bring a moment of peace to your daily life.
