As we dive into the heart of summer, the Mekong Elephant Park is excited to share some fantastic updates and upcoming events that are sure to bring you joy and opportunities to connect with our beloved elephants. Here’s a glimpse of what’s happening at the park this month.
Our Night Fence
The Mekong Elephant Park sanctuary’s main 2024 initiative to construct a 10-hectare night fence for its female elephants is more than ever crucial as we are already half way in the year!
Indeed, let us remind that elephants are highly social animals that form strong bonds within their herds, especially females who rely on each other for support and care, particularly during vulnerable times like resting and sleeping. A dedicated night fence will ensure that these elephants can gather together safely in a protected environment, fostering their social cohesion and natural behaviors.
Moreover, in the wild and even in sanctuaries, elephants face certain threats, which can disrupt their sleep patterns and stress levels. A secure night enclosure minimizes these risks, providing a tranquil space where elephants can rest undisturbed, promoting their overall well-being and health.
By prioritizing this project for 2024, the sanctuary demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its resident elephants, ensuring they have a safe and supportive environment where they can thrive. A night fence suitable for our elephants costs 20.000$, and thanks to your generous donations, big or small, we are already 2/3 of the way there.
Donations towards this initiative would directly contribute to the welfare and conservation efforts of these magnificent animals so we are forever grateful of all the help and support. Every little helps count, from making a donation to spreading the word about our initiative.
Let’s keep working together to make their dream a reality
Happy Children’s Day
Last June 1st was Children’s Day in Laos! On this occasion, we welcomed many children from different schools in Pakbeng to the Mekong Elephant Park. Many of these children had never seen elephants before, despite the animal’s significant role in their culture. We were eager to share the mahout’s knowledge about the forest and present our sustainable alternatives, believing that locals, regardless of age, must be at the heart of our project and our reflection.
We always believe that the future of Asian elephants depends on the new generation, making it crucial for us to educate young people about current issues, raise their awareness, and encourage them to adopt new practices. We also had a fun time planting trees for the sanctuary and, of course, sharing chocolate cake and papaya salad with the cutest children (in the middle of elephants) was simply irresistible!
We would like to thank this opportunity to thank all that participated as this delightful day reinforced our commitment to involving the local community in our conservation efforts.
Vet visit for our elephants
We were delighted to host Dr. Christopher Stremme, a distinguished German veterinarian specializing in elephant care, at our park recently. During his visit, Dr. Stremme conducted comprehensive health check-ups for all our elephants, ensuring their overall well-being.
A significant highlight of his visit was the ultrasound examination of Kham Khoun’s testicles to ensure everything was in order. We are happy to announce that Kham Khoun and the rest of the head received a clean bill of health!
Regular veterinary examinations are crucial for safeguarding the health and welfare of our elephants, and we deeply appreciate Dr. Stremme’s expertise and dedication in visiting us yearly and providing exceptional care.
